Reading, arts and science
School Settlement emphasizes literacy and reading at its after-school centers and summer camps. Children participate in a unique experience that combines high-quality youth development with intensive literacy activities, including:
- Curricula focused on theme-based activities
- Arts education that builds creativity, language development and reading comprehension
- STEM activities that connect reading, science and math
- Family literacy workshops that encourage families and their children to read
- Mentoring that connects children with peers, teens and adults
- The BK Story Voyager, a new mobile book distribution system (a.k.a. “book bus”) that sparks a child’s interest in books and learning
Middle school after-school services
Students foster self-fulfillment and career exploration. Students experience visual and theater arts, music, technology and athletics enrichment to support their development as active, engaged community members.
Community engagement and internships
Student internships foster community service. Students take a hands-on role in helping shape their enrichment experience. They learn professional skills by being teamed with our experienced staff.
Middle school students are matched with teaching artists and mentors. The program provides needed supplemental arts education supplementing what is offered in public schools with curriculum that facilitates civic engagement and fosters a sense of community and team-building. Students also explore career paths in the arts.
School Settlement provides a 7-week, full-day, summer camp at all three locations in the context of the wider offerings of St. Nicks Alliance. Camp features reading and creative writing, along with STEM activities designed to overcome summer learning loss as well as arts, recreation, sports, and exciting trips that cultivate inquiry and learning.
